Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is presently on vacation after spending 35 years of his life creating movies, and he seems to be making the most of it. The Laal Singh Chaddha actor recently spent an evening of stories, conversations, and laughter in the peaceful and imaginative surroundings of Adishakti - Laboratory For Theatre Art Research, close to Puducherry. He was wearing an all-grey ensemble.

VINAY KUMAR

Vinay Kumar, the Artistic director of Adishakti, "Adishakti and Aamir have been connected since the 1980s, when Prithvi Theatre's new and classic plays dominated the Mumbai theatre scene. The fact that he was back with us today was quite an experience, made even more so by the fact that he had previously collaborated with Veenapani Chawla, our founder and guru. He visited Adishakti the other day while he was in the area to meet a buddy. He sat down in the middle of the crowd and began to tell tales and reminisce about his days before making his Bollywood debut. It resembled a split second in time. At seven o'clock that night, we started talking, and didn't stop until four the next morning. He joined us for dinner as well.”

Veenapani, who received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award for her contributions to experimental theatre in modern India, founded the prestigious performing arts organisation. The most well-known plays by Adishakti are Bhoomi, Brhannala, and Ganapati.

Before his career took a completely unexpected turn in 1988 with the release of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Aamir made his stage debut in the Gujarati play Kesar Bina at the Prithvi Theatre.

"Aamir talked about how he started his career with Gujarati theatre that night at Adishakti. He formerly performed backstage duties for Avantar, a theatre troupe led by seasoned actor Mahendra Joshi. Aamir related tales of his friendship with Aditya Bhattacharya, the director-screenwriter and the man who had directed his 1989 National Award-winning movie Raakh. Overall, it was a conversation-filled evening, largely about theatre and a little bit of film,” Vinay continues.

So, is the PK star considering making a stage comeback? "We certainly hope so. It was comforting to know that despite spending decades in movies, his love for theatre hasn't changed, whether or not he makes a comeback to the stage. He clearly absorbed the creative energies of Adishakti, as evidenced by the length of time he spent chatting with us about theatre.”

AAMIR KHAN

Aamir declared in November 2022 that he intended to take a hiatus, perhaps for a year and a half. His most recent movie, Laal Singh Chaddha, is a 'purported replica' of the legendary Forrest Gump from 1994. The eagerly anticipated movie, which also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, struggled at the box office due to the "cancel culture."
