He was born in Pakistan and converted to Indian citizenship in 2016. The artist, however, received a lot of criticism for his choice. Many individuals find inspiration in Adnan's transformation of his body. He also discussed it on a number of times. Music fans in India and around the world have shown him a lot of affection. Some were enraged by his choice to settle here and said derogatory things about him.

Adnan Sami recently discussed how people in his home country felt about his choice to become an Indian citizen during an interview with Humans of Bombay. He stated: ‘Oh, he has chosen India because he has got more money over there, he’s making more money over there.’ I said, ‘Excuse me, do you have any idea what my family background is? Do you have any idea that money has never been a factor in my life? I have been blessed to have been born and brought up in a very well-to-do, wealthy family. Money, if at all, I have given up a lot, because there’s a tremendous amount of stuff that I could have inherited from there (Pakistan) which I have given away.'”

Adnan Sami said, “The kind of love and appreciation I got over here overwhelmed me as an artist.” when asked about the admiration and praise he received from India. In his words, he "felt at home" here.

Adnan added that he knows that these result from the political hostility between the two countries. In reference to what Adnan Sami said, “I understand why it is a big deal because of the animosity between the two countries. It’s a political issue but the point is, I have nothing to do with politics. I am a musician.”

Adnan Sami revealed in a previous conversation with Mashable India that it took him 18 years to become an Indian citizen. He took a while to get there, but he did in 2016.
