Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone was the star of the show as she walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony. The Chhapaak (2020) actress, who is also a member of the Cannes jury this year, picked a black and gold shimmering sari by acclaimed designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for her night in the spotlight.

Her sari had sequin embroidery that sparkled. Bling has made an appearance in Sabyasachi's designs, providing an interesting canvas to work with. At the Sabyasachi workshop, some of India's finest craftsmen block printed and hand-stitched the black and gold stripes. The Bengal Tiger couture sari is part of the Aakash Tara collection, which honours traditional Indian crafts and methods with a contemporary twist.

Padukone complemented the ensemble with a set of classic chandelier earrings with an Art Deco stare and a headband with Art Nouveau embellishments that paid respect to the traditional Indian matha patti headgear.

Sharing a set of pictures of her look on Instagram, the 36-year-old actress captioned, “The sari is a story I will never stop telling. No matter where we are in the world, it has its place” said Sabyasachi Mukherjee…and I couldn’t agree more!”

Deepika is one of nine members of the jury that will select the winners of this year's Palme d'Or awards during a gala ceremony on May 28 in Cannes. Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace, and Italian actor-director Jasmine Trinca are among the other jury members, and so are directors Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols, and Joachim Trier.
