Music composer-singer Bappi Lahiri dies at age 69 following multiple health issues
Bappi Lahiri, music composer and singer best known in the Indian music industry for his disco music in the 1980s and 1990s, died on Wednesday morning at the Criticare Hospital in Mumbai. On Tuesday night, the veteran singer was rushed to the hospital after his health began to deteriorate.
Lahiri had been in and out of the hospital for the previous year due to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). According to the hospital's official statement, he was treated by Dr Deepak Namjoshi and was under his care for 29 days.
“He recovered well and was discharged home on 15 february. However, after a day at home his health again deteriorated and he was brought back to Criticare Hospital, Juhu in a critical state and succumbed to his illness at about 11:45 pm. He suffered from COVID-19 infection last year. He has had OSA since last one year. He was admitted on multiple occasions in Criticare hospital under treatment of Dr Deepak Namjoshi and recovered on all occasions,” a statement read.
Bappi Lahiri was born in 1952 in Calcutta, West Bengal, into a family with a rich musical tradition. At the age of 19, he began his career as a music director.
Aparesh Lahiri, his father, was a well-known Bengali singer, and Bansari Lahiri, his mother, was a musician and singer who was well-versed in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. His parents educated him in all aspects of music.
At the 63rd Filmfare Awards, Bappi received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
