The 69th edition of the National Film Awards was revealed through a press conference held at the National Media Centre in Delhi. The announcement event was live-streamed on the Facebook and YouTube platforms of the Press Information Bureau.

In the previous year, at the 68th National Film Awards, the Best Actor awards were claimed by Ajay Devgn for his role in ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ and Suriya for his performance in ‘Soororai Pottru’. Aparna Balamurali, Suriya's co-star, was honored with the Best Actress award. ‘Soororai Poottru’ also secured the National Award for Best Feature Film.
