According to reports, Ranveer Singh has decided to forgo his pending remuneration for his recently released sports drama 83 (2021). Made on a lavish budget of approximately ₹270 crore, the film has failed to click with the audience, incurring heavy losses for every stakeholder associated with it, including Deepika Padukone who co-produced the venture along with Reliance Entertainment, Kabir Khan Films, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, and Phantom Films.

A source in the know informs a publication, “The film looks and feels like a documentary on the 1983 World Cup. Some from the production team had pointed this out while the film was being made. What was the need to shoot at the pricey Lords stadium in London when there are so many similarly vast cricket stadiums right here in India? But the naysayers were shut down by director Kabir Khan and Ranveer Singh who were fully confident of getting the audience into theaters.”

Buzz has it that a large chunk of Ranveer Singh’s fee is still pending and he may let it go in order to save the producers from extra losses.

The film received glowing reviews from critics but the same did not translate into theatrical footfalls. A sudden surge in coronavirus cases in the country has acted as a major deterrent for the audience to come out and visit cinemas. Having said that, the Hindi version of Telugu film Pushpa: The Rise (2021), which released a week before 83, is still doing a great business in the Hindi belt.
