It was a tough year for Bollywood at the box-office. After a number of releases at theatres only few succeed in gaining numbers and winning audience’s hearts. Many of them are from South including KGF 2, Kantara, Vikram, and Ponniyin Selvan. Brahmastra, Bhool Bhulaiya, and The Kashmir Files are the only Bollywood films which have been a blockbuster. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has criticised Bollywood harshly for "not learning" from the success of underappreciated movies like The Kashmir Files, which he directed, and the Kannada movie Kantara.

Vivek Agnihotri has been outspoken about the unfair treatment that outsiders get in the Bollywood. The director recently attacked the Bollywood producers on Twitter by releasing the budget and projected box office receipts for four low-budget films. He took to Twitter and wrote, “4 small films with no stars, no marketing or distribution support - #TheKashmirFiles, #Kartikeya2, #Kantara & #Rocketry earned approx 800 Cr at BO. Total cost of production of 4 films under 75 cr. Is Bollywood blind, deaf & dumb that they don’t understand simple maths and learn?”

Vivek's movie, The Kashmir Files, reportedly cost around 15 crore to produce. As word of mouth spread, the movie became a sleeper hit, earning a total of 341 crore rupees worldwide. Similar to this, Nikhil Siddhartha's Karthikeya 2 was produced on a similar budget and brought in a total of 120 crore worldwide. Rocketry reportedly cost 25 crores but grossed 50 crores. Kantara, a film by Rishab Shetty, is still playing in theatres. The tiny movie is the third-highest grossing Kannada movie of all time with nearly 250 crore in revenue.
