According to "Variety," the French filmmaker - actress Maiwenn’s historical drama "Jeanne du Barry," starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV of France, is scheduled to have its global premiere on the opening night of the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

After a three-year break due to his long-running legal dispute with his ex-wife Amber Heard, which culminated in a defamation trial Depp won in December, the film represents Depp's return to acting.

The unstable relationship between the French king and Jeanne du Barry, who he brought into the Versailles Palace to reside close to him despite the fact that she wasn't a noble, is the focus of Maiwenn's sixth film.

The monarch known as "the beloved," Louis XV, passed away as an unpopular figure after being charged with corruption. After Louis XIV's, his 59-year rule was the longest in French history.

Before the filming began, Johnny Depp, according to 'Variety,' hardly knew any French, so it will be fascinating to see how he manages to pull it off without an accent.

Previous Cannes appearances by Maiwenn include "Polisse," which received the Jury Prize in 2011, and "My King," which won Emmanuelle Bercot the best actress prize in 2015. Another anticipated competitor in the contest is "Jeanne du Barry."

According to "Variety," the Cannes Film Festival will reveal its Official Selection on April 13. In the interim, it has provided confirmation for two eagerly anticipated American films: Disney's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which sees Harrison Ford return to the renowned series, and Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.
