Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), a biographical crime drama starring Alia Bhatt in the titular role, has been performing extremely well at the box office ever since hitting cinemas on February 25. The film released amid largely positive reviews days after it had a grand world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival where it received a standing ovation.
Exceeding expectations, Gangubai Kathiawadi racked up an impressive ₹39.12 crores in its first weekend. The film earned ₹10.50 crore on its opening day. The second day, it witnessed a growth in collection and netted ₹13.32 crore. On Sunday alone, the film garnered ₹15.30 crore.
Considering that this is an expensive film that has arrived at a time when there is so much uncertainty about how audiences will enter theatres, the need of the hour was for the beginning to be good enough. The film has performed better than expected, as many expected it to earn ₹30 crores in its opening weekend.
The film cannot afford to lose steam because there is still a long way to go before it reaches the coveted mark of ₹100 crore.
The plot of Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Aside from Alia Bhatt, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Jim Sarbh, Indira Tiwari, and Seema Pahwa also feature in the film. Additionally, Ajay Devgn plays an extended cameo, which has been loved by everyone alike.
