After the successful reception of his recently released period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to start filming another opulent period drama titled Heeramandi.
Set to be mounted on a lavish scale, Heeramandi is a streaming show which will depict stories of courtesans and the intrigues of brothels, besides exploring human emotions like love, betrayal, and heartbreak through the characters.
The ambitious project is set in Lahore and it will be recreated in the same location where Sanjay Leela Bhansali shot Gangubai Kathiawadi with Alia Bhatt as the lead.
With Heeramandi ready to go on floors, Bhansali is super-excited for the costume drama set in pre-partition India.
"Gangubai Kathiawadi was my most exhausting film to date. It left me completely sapped. I needed time to get back into work mode. But there was no time. Heeramandi, which I am committed to doing, is all set to start shooting. Luckily, I am not directing all the episodes," Bhansali said.
While Heeramandi will feature flamboyant tawaifs, it is only obvious to imagine that music will play an important role in the project. Admitting this, Bhansali says, "Yes, music will be of utmost importance. But we are not making a Pakeezah or an Umrao Jaan here. There are songs, quite a few of them, but the focus will be on the drama."
