Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Movie Review Rating: 4/5

Karan Johar is considered to be one of the biggest filmmakers in India, who has delivered massive blockbusters throughout his 25-year-long directorial career in Hindi films. With his latest directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, he celebrates his 25th year at the movies. Just like his previous outing, his latest film also features an ensemble cast, including Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. The pre-release buzz around the film was huge, but does the film live up to the high expectations that the audience has from it? Well, our BollywoodMDB reviewer has seen the film, and here is what he has to say about the same. Do read the review of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani on BollywoodMDB before booking your tickets.

STORY: Based in Delhi, Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) is a loud Punjabi boy and the only heir of a conservative business family. One fine day, he gets in touch with Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt), a star journalist at India Now, in order to help his grandfather (Dharmendra) reconnect with his old flame, Rani’s grandmother (Shabana Azmi), though against the wish of his stern and always growling grandmother (Jaya Bachchan). The two had no idea that while helping their grandparents rekindle their old romance, they themselves would fall in love with each other. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

HIGHS & LOWS: Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has grandness written all over it. Right from its ensemble cast to magnificent sets and costumes, everything that you see on the screen is grand and lavish. Karan Johar has worked precisely on every aspect of the film and keeps it well-paced with no dull moment throughout its almost 3-hour-long runtime. He has used a few old classic Hindi film songs so well in the film that it makes it even more watchable. Johar touches upon several important issues in the film, such as patriarchy, misogyny, elitism, etc., without sounding preachy at any moment.

Talking about performances, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt do complete justice to their characters. Singh as a loud Punjabi guy who is a kid at heart is bang on. Bhatt as a career-oriented woman who does not mind falling for a man who is not intellectually at par with her is terrific. Their chemistry is infectious. Though the film has Singh and Bhatt as the lead pair, the man who may really steal your heart is veteran actor Dharmendra. He gets some brilliant scenes in the film and elevates them with his impeccable performance. Shabana Azmi also gets a well-written character to play and she pulls it off with panache. Jaya Bachchan as the authoritative grandmother is fine.

The editing and music of the film are great. Composer Pritam and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya’s combination works wonders yet again. The cinematography and production design of the film are rich.

Do not miss Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani at the cinemas closest to you. I am going with 4 stars.
