Anupam Kher Biography

Anupam Kher is one of the respectable actors of Indian film Industry. He is married to Kiron Kher. Actor Sikander Kher is his stepson. His brother Raju Kher is a TV and Film Actor. Anupam Kher was born and brought up in Shimla to a family of Kashmiri Pundits. He has done his schooling from D.A.V School in Shimla. He used to act in plays while studying in Himachal Pradesh. After graduating, Anupam joined the National School of Drama (NSD) at Delhi to polish his Acting skills.

Kher started his filmy career from the movie 'Aagaman' in 1982. But he really captured the eyes of viewers and critics with Mahesh Bhatt's 'Saaransh' produced by Rajshri Productions. Kher successfully essayed the role of a retired old middle class person who loses his son. Kher was only 27 years of age at that time. He won a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his role in that movie. After it, he has done over 400 movies and continues to entertain audiences till date. He has acted in Malyalam , Marathi and Punjabi movies. His role in 'Daddy' (1991) won him the Filmfare award for the best actor.

Kher is mainly remembered for various characters he played like his comic characters in the movie 'Darr','Ram Lakhan', 'Lamhe', 'Hum aapke hai Kaun','Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge', etc. He did some negative and gray characters like Dr.Dang the terrorist in 'Karma','Chaalbaaz','Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja' and many more. He is one of the few actors who gained success both in commercial and art cinema. Also, he thrived in the industry for quite a long period. Other than movies, Anupam also appeared on Television. Some of his famous shows were ' saying na something to Anupam Uncle', 'Sawaal Dus crore ka' a game show and 'Lead India'.

He also tried his hands in the direction with his directorial debut in 'Om Jai Jagdish'. He also produced a few movies. 'Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara' movie produced under his banner and also had him acting in it was a critical success. He got a Best Actor award at the Karachi International Film Festival for the same. He also featured in some international projects like 'Bend It like Beckham', 'Bride and Prejudice', 'The Mistress of spices', 'Lust', 'Caution', 'Silver Linings Playbook'. He has worked as a chairman of Censor board. He was also the director of NSD from 2001 to 2004. In 2007 he started a production house 'Karol Baugh Productions' along with N.S.D batch mate Satish Kaushik. He was appointed as the Brand Ambassador for Pratham Education Foundation, working for the education of children in India. He also owns an acting academy. Lately, His role in Neeraj Pandey's 'A Wednesday' was quite appreciated. Anupam will soon appear acting in 'Special chabbis' along with Akshay Kumar which is also directed by Neeraj Pandey.
