Aparna Sen Biography

Aparna Sen is an Indian film actress born on October 25, 1945 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India. She comes from literary background, her father being a veteran critic and filmmaker Chidanand Dasgupta and her mother Supriya Dasgupta was cousin of famous poet Jibanananda Das. She completed her schooling from Modern High School and got graduated with a Bachelors degree in Arts from Presidency College, Kolkata.

In 1961, Aparna marked her debut with renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray's 'Teen Kanya' at an early age of 15. Since then her performance left a long-term impact on her onlookers and this quality made her cast in the lead role in acclaimed films. Being the reigning actress of Bengali Films, she also illuminated the screens of Hindi Cinema with film like 'Immaan Dharam' opposite Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar and Rekha. She is also referred as "The Monsoon Girl" after she featured in Brian Brake's exclusive monsoon photo shoot.

Being a National Award winning actress, she also prospered in the field of direction. Her directorial debut Bengali film '36 Chowringhee Lane' earned her critical acclamation as well as it went on earning awards in number of prestigious film festivals. She continued with her exemplary work that gained her international recognition. She also served as an editor to popular Bengali magazine Sananda.

Aparna holds the record of being one of the great actress, filmmaker and scriptwriter of Indian Cinema. She is a complete enthusiast even at the retiring age and continues to contribute to art of filmmaking as much as she can being a jury member at film festivals like Asia Pacific Screen Awards and 16th Moscow International Film Festival.

On the personal front, Aparna got married three times in her lifetime. Her first marriage was with Sanjay Sen. Later she married science writer and journalist Mukul Sharma and had two daughters with him, named Kamalini Chaterjee and Konkona Sen Sharma, who is also an actress. But then she parted her ways with Mr. Sharma and finally got settled with Author-Professor Kalyan Ray.
