Dev Patel Biography

Dev Patel became a household name as Jamal Malik in the award winning flick 'Slumdog Millionaire'. He is also remembered for his role as Anwar Kharral , a British Pakistani Muslim Teenager in 'Skins'. Dev Patel was born on 23rd April 1990 in Harrow, London. He hails from a Gujarati family. His parents are Anita Patel who is a carer and Raj Patel who is an IT Consultant. His parents were born in Nairobi, Kenya. Dev Patel was raised in the Hindu faith.

Dev stayed at Rayners Lane in Harrow where he went to Longfield Middle School. He also attended Whitmore High School. There, he received A* in GCSE Drama. He has completed his AS Levels in Biology, History, Drama and PE in 2007 at Whitmore High School. Dev worked towards a black belt at the Rayners Lane Academy of Taekwondo and won the bronze medal in the Taekwondo World Championship held in Dublin, Ireland.

Dev began the journey of his acting career with the television series named 'Skins'. Dev's mother saw the advertisement of casting in the newspaper and took him for the auditions. Dev got selected and played a role of a British Muslim Teenager in the series. He also essayed the same character in the second season of 'Skins' as well.

Dev made his big screen debut with the film 'Slumdog Millionaire' essaying the center role of Jamal Malik. He gave five auditions for this role and did lots of homework for the same. After the film was released, the handsome young man received lots of awards and nominations for the genuine portrayal of the role of Jamal. He got lots of accolades and fan following after this film which went on to get the prestigious Golden Globe award. Dev has received following awards for the same, Black Reel Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Black Reel Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Young Performer, Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Newcomer, Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Award for Best Newcomer. The talented actor got the nominations at the following awards for his performance in 'Slumdog Millionaire' , BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer, European Film Award for Best Actor, London Critics Circle Film Award for Best British Actor, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Saturn Award for Best Actor , Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

After this film, Dev was seen in Manoj Night Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender'. The film was released in 2010 and Dev played a character named Zuko in this film. He was also featured in a short film named 'The Commuter' . The film was made to promote Nokia N8 Smartphone in UK.

Later the talented actor was seen in 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' which was directed by John Madden. He had to learn the Indian-English accent for the film as his English accent was very strong. The young man was next seen in a supporting role in 2012 HBO TV series 'The Newsroom' as Neal Sampat. Dev also starred next in 'About Cherry' with James Franco and Heather Graham. The film was premiered at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival.
