Gurdas Maan Biography

He is a multifaceted personality, as he is a singer, choreographer, lyricist as well as an actor. In the world of Punjabi music, Gurdas Maan is counted as one of the most renowned figures. Maan was born in Punjab province in Giddarbaha village on January 4, 1957.

The song 'Dil Da Mamla Hai' in the year 1980 was the one that brought Gurdas Maan into spotlight. The singer recorded over 34 albums and around 305 songs are written by Maan. He completed his schooling from D.A.V college in Punjab. He was enrolled by his parents for further education in an institute in Patiala. Being a sports lover, Gurdas Maan was fascinated by National Institute of Sports in the town. He also joined N. I. S. and achieved a Masters Degree in physical training. Maan was active in youth festivals arranged by universities and even accomplished bronze medal at the National Championship. Gurdas attained a black belt in Judo. He commenced his career as Punjab State Electricity Board employee.

The song 'Dil Da Mamla Hai' aired on 31st December, 1980 and made Gurdas Maan a national figure by gaining national attention. Television programs like POP Time aired on Doordarshan Network in Delhi was directed and written by Gurdas Maan. The talented singer even received international acclaim for his excellent Punjabi folk music. At Asian Pop and Media Awards held in 1998 in Birmingham, his album Apna Punjab won the Best Album title. In 2009, at the UK Asian Music Awards, he won 'Best International Album' for Boot Polishan. A Punjabi movie 'Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris' contained his song 'Couplets Of Heer', which won the title of National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2007. Gurdas Maan bagged Critics Award at PTC Punjabi Film Awards in 2011 for Best Actor in a film titled 'Sukhmani'. PTC Network honored the singer with title of 'Kohinoor of Punjab' in 2012.

At ETC Channel Punjabi Music Awards, Gurdas grabbed three music awards including Best Song for 'Heer', Best Lyrics for 'Kudiye' and Best Singer of the Year. Gurdas Maan even showed his acting talent in the Punjabi films, such as 'Shaheed-E-Mohabbat' and 'Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris'. The film 'Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris' was nominated for OSCAR Awards in the year 2006. In a Punjabi flick 'Des Hoyaa Pardes', he starred alongside Juhi Chawla. Apart from Punjabi, the crooner is also fluent in the other languages like Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Rajasthani and Haryanvi. With Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, the singer was seen in the film 'Veer-Zaara'.
