Rohit Shetty Biography

Rohit Shetty is one among the biggest commercial cinema directors of Bollywood in current scenario. Rohit is also the only Indian director to have 3 movies with 100 crore business done. Rohit Shetty is known to make movies of various genres but have received wide acceptance for directing comic capers.

Rohit Shetty hails from the city of Mangalore, Karnataka, India. Rohit was born on 14th March 1973 to M. B. Shetty, popularly known as Fighter Shetty in Bollywood, who served Hindi and Kannada cinema quite long. Born in a filmy family, Rohit at the tender age of 13-14 dreamt of becoming a director.

Rohit began his career when he was just 17 years of age. He assisted Kuku Kohli in direction of 'Phool Aur Kaante' in which Ajay Devgn debuted. Next, Rohit assisted the director in 'Ek Aur Kohinoor' which was stalled. The director and assistant worked together for movies like 'Suhaag', 'Haqeeqat' (1995) (starring Ajay Devgn in lead) and 'Zulmi'.

This consecutive association led to a deep bonding between Ajay and Rohit. After it, they worked together in Anees Bazmee's 'Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha' and in Ajay's home production, 'Hindustan Ki Kasam' and 'Raju Chacha'. While filming 'Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha', Rohit was convinced about himself to be capable of independent direction and he promised to take Ajay in his directorial debut.

Shetty's first movie as a fully fledged director was 'Zameen' (2003) starring Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan which did an average business. Rohit came to the limelight with his second movie 'Golmaal' (2006) where he revealed his sense of directing dark humor. The film was a success at the box office. In 2008, Rohit tried his hands in directing a suspense-comedy 'Sunday' which received a favorable response from critics. In the same year, he came with the sequel to 'Golmaal'- 'Golmaal Returns'. The movie comprised most of the same cast from the first installment except Sharman Joshi and Rimi Sen who were replaced by Shreyas Talpade and Kareena Kapoor. Though the movie opened with some mixed reviews, it gradually moved to become a hit at the end and got commercial success. In 2009, Rohit's only release was 'All The Best'. It contained a song which went on to become one of the most costly songs shot ever. The movie did a great commercial business. But it was his 2010 movie 'Golmaal 3' which got critical and commercial appraisal for him and proved out to be the biggest hit of his career. His 2011 movie 'Singham' had a great financial success. It was based on a daring and honest police officer who fights against corruption like a brave lion. In 2012, he again directed a comedy 'Bol Bachchan' closely inspired on the script of an old comedy movie 'Gol Maal' (1979) directed by comedy king Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It featured Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn in lead roles. It too proved a commercial and critical success.

Rohit is all set to direct his big-budgeted next 'Chennai Express' with Shah Rukh Khan as a lead. This will be the first time when Rohit will work without Ajay Devgn.
