Satish Kaushik Biography

Satish Kaushik is undoubtedly a long time contributor to the Hindi film industry, with numerous roles, directions and productions to his credit. He was born in a Dhanouda village in Haryana on 13th April 1956. However, he grew up in Delhi's Karolbagh and completed his college education in Kirori Mal College. He gained a graduate degree in film from the National School of Drama in the year 1978 and later joined Pune's Film and Television Institute of India.

He commenced his career as an assistant to Shekhar Kapoor for the 1983 film 'Masoom'. In addition, he also did the dialogue writing for the 1983 hit comedy film 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro'. He also acted in the hit 1987 film 'Mr India' as 'Calendar' the friendly orphanage cook, which is the role he is popularly noted for. He was also seen in 'Ram Lakhan' in 1990 doing a comic role.

He made his directorial debut in 1993 with 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja', which was a box office disaster and so was his second directed film named 'Prem' (1995). After that, he was seen in films like 'Aatank Hi Aatank' (1995), 'Mr. Bechara' (1996) and 'Saajan Chale Sasural (1997). His yet another popular role in Bollywood is that of 'Pappu Pager' in the 1997 film 'Deewana Mastana'. In 1999, he had the first successful film directed by him, named 'Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain'. By the end of the decade, he had won two Filmfare Best Comedian Awards, one for 'Ram Lakhan' and the other for 'Saajan Chale Sasural'.

In the 2000s he directed films like 'Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai' (2001), 'Badhaai Ho Badhaai' (2002), 'Tere Naam' (2003), 'Karzzzz' (2008) and 'Milenge Milenge' (2009). In 2007 he was seen in a British film by 'Sarah Gavron', named 'Brick Lane', where he played the role of a South Asian Briton named 'Chanu Ahmed'. In 2009, he touched upon the sensitive social topic of teenage pregnancies in his film 'Teree Sang'.

Amongst his future projects, he includes a film based on Emperor Akbar's court musician Tansen. Rajshri Productions will produce the film and Abhishek Bachchan will play the titled role. Alongside, he is also seriously involved in developing Haryana state's film industry. Today, he is one of the board members of the Asian Academy of Film & Television.
