He belongs to Holkars family which is said to be one of the royal family of Indore. Sita Raje Ghatge is his mother and Sagarika Ghatge, actress of Chak De India is his girl.

In 1976 Vijayendra set out his film career with Chitchor and has acted in several other movies like Kasme Vaade, Shaayad, Nazrana Pyar Ka, Aakhri Insaaf, Meraa Ghar Mere Bachche, Mohabbat Ke Dushman, Sanam Bewafa, and many more. In superhit movie Devdaas he played the part of Aishwarya Rai's husband and in Salman Khan's Garv : Pride and Honour he was a Chief Minister.
