Rating: 2.5/5

There was a controversy raised by the Sikh community regarding the clean shaven look of Akshay as the son of a Sikh character played by Rishi Kapoor but when you watch the movie in the beginning only it is justified why it is done so. The writer - director has justified the deed which would surely convince the Sikh community but the film is not about that only. Is the film really good and entertaining? The film is directed by Nikhil Advani who earlier directed films of Karan Johar and CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA.

PATIALA HOUSE is better movie of Akshay Kumar than the ones which were released in the last two years but it is not as good as expected. Long time back a film was made based on cricket titled as LAGAAN in which Aamir Khan played the main role. LAGAAN was is one of the best movies based on cricket till date. Akshay Kumar's PATIALA HOUSE stands no where in comparison to LAGAAN. Though this film tries to impress you in many ways but fails to pull it off.Well, what kind of film PATIALA HOUSE is; I mean to say in which genre it falls? Is it a comedy or a drama or a thriller? Well, it doesn't fall in any category because it is neither a comedy nor a complete drama film. You can neither laugh nor cry by watching any scene.

Story : The film is about Akshay's ambition to play in the Cricket team of British. Rishi Kapoor, his father, also known as Babuji, lives in UK in South Hall Patiala. Babuji is respected by everyone in his family and no one dares to disobey his commands (whether reluctantly or willingly). Though Babuji lives in London, he hates British. The reason behind it is that his close friend Prem Chopra (Advocate) was killed by the British. Babuji can not forget the shooting of Prem Chopra by bullets.

Babuji's son Pargat Singh alias Guttu (Akshay Kumar) too can't utter any word in front of his Babuji. He is a good baller. He has made his reorganization in the age of 17 years. He dreams to be a part of Bristih Cricket team. But Babuji is totally against it and at any cost he won't allow his son to be a part of British Cricket team.

So what happens to the ambition and dream of Guttu? Does he play from England side or he listens to what his Babuji wanted? The answers of such question make the rest of the film.

Performance : Akshay has not done comedy in this film so he looks good and he has even performed well. To look as a fast baller he has labored hard. Rishi Kapoor is outstanding in his performance and fits into the role hundred percent. Even Dimple Kapadia has done a great job. Anushka too has improved a lot and looks better than her previous films.

Script : Though the motive of the film is good the script is weak and is unable to hook the audience.

Music : Music of the film given by Shankar Ehshaan Loy is good and some of the songs had become popular before its release which is a plus point of the film.

Direction : The director could not concentrate on his job because he left the film like any half baked product. Its first half is good and convincing but what about the second half? It should have been much better, much exciting and as the film moves towards climax it could have been more interesting. But it is not so. The director fails to narrate the story in a convincing manner except justification of clean shaven Akshay in the beginning. Nikhil Advani had given one of the biggest flops CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA recently but has managed to improve his direction in this film.

Plus Point: The message of the film is good.

Minus Point: It is not entertaining!

Verdict : Not a bad film. You can go for it if you don't know how to spend your time.
