After a long time Ram Gopal Varma is back with film of his style. Long years back he had made Shiva which was a very nice and meaningful movie. Shiva was appreciated by all and this film gave Ram Gopal Varma recognition in Bollywood.

But for the last few years it seems that Ram Gopal Varma had lost his style by giving some low grade horror films in series or by giving some senseless films like Nisabad.

But with Rann, he seems to be back in his original style.

Rann is a meaningful and sensible film. Above all there is Amitabh Bachchan in it who is the heart and soul of the film. Even after growing old, he is still a super star. When he acts in any film you think it is his best performance but in fact he gives his best in every film. However, bad script has spoilt his efforts many times.

Amitabh Bachchan's performance in Rann is superb. The way he delivers dialogues is excellent. In this film he has played the role of editor and channel owner. It is a different role for him; perhaps he has never played an editor's role earlier.

Some years back Amitabh Bachchan had done a film Main Azad Hoon, which too was a very meaningful and sensible film. If we compare that film with this film, it won't be wrong. Though, business wise that film didn't do well, but overall the film was highly appreciated. Similar to Rann, that film too was based on press which is also known as fourth estate or fourth pillar. Since news channels were not common those days, the film was weaved around working style of newspaper. In that film, it is shown how newspaper can be used or misused. An owner of a newspaper tries to misuse his paper so that he could become Prime Minister of this country. Similarly, Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal) wants to use Amitabh Bachchan's news channel as a ladder to get at the top seat of Prime Minister. But Amitabh Bachchan is a true and honest journalist. He would never allow this in his news channel. Then what would Paresh Rawal do to fulfill his dreams?

Before I tell you about the story any more let me first introduce its characters and star cast. Besides Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal, Ritesh Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Rajat Kapoor, Mohnish Behl, Sudeep, Suchitra Krishnmurty, Gul Panag and Neetu Chandra are some vital casts to be mentioned.

Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh Bachchan) is the founder and owner of private news channel called as INDIA 24/7. This channel is also first ever private news channel in our country. Vijay Harshvardhan Malik is a Havard returned personality who has great respect in India, especially in media he is respected a lot. He is a man of ethics and he never compromises for his personal benefits. He can never follow any wrong path to get success. He is ready to bear any kind of loss but never to leave the side of truth and honesty. But his channel is not doing well in comparison to other channel. In fact his channel is battling for survival. His son Jay Malik (Sudeep) blames his father for the failure of his channel; he blames his father's policy and ethics. He is not good like his father. In fact he comes not even closer to his father. He is a businessman who wants to earn profit by hook or by crook. When he sees that his competitors are earning more profit he doesn't like it. He doesn't consider press and media a powerful tool for the growth of the nation. He considers his father's channel too a means to make huge money. To earn profit he can acquire any means. Thus you see that Vijay Malik's son is against him; directly or indirectly. Not only his son, his son-in-law Naveen Shanlalya (Rajat Kapoor) too is not a well wisher of him. Naveen is one of the top most industrialists of the country but he is not a contended person. He is an unsatisfied and very insecure about his status. He covets to become number one industrialist in the country.

Naveen expects his buddy Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal) to promote him to become India's number one industrialist. Mohan Pandey is a leader whose only dream is to become the Prime Minister of India. He can do anything to achieve his goal that is the chair of the Prime Minister. Very soon Naveen and Mohan Pandey shake hands to help each other in order to attain their goals which affect Vijay Malik greatly. Mohan Pandey wants to use Vijay Malik's channel for the purpose of his promotion in unfair way, with the help of his son-in-law Naveen. Thus we see Vijay Malik battling with so many people at a time. On one hand his son is against his policies and on the other hand his son-in-law is stabbing in his back. Not only this, there is another chap named as Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish Behl), whom Vijay Malik had given opportunity to work in his channel but after learning the tactics of running channel from him, he separated and started another channel in competition of India 24/7. Amrish uses and follows all negative means, to increase the TRP of his channel. He doesn't care whether the audience is going to get profit or loss; he just wants TRPs by hook or by crook.

When there are so many people against Vijay Malik, there is one person Purab Shashtri (Ritesh Deshmukh) who thinks like Vijay Malik. He too is a qualified journalist and just like Vijay Malik, he wants to work towards the development of his country.

How Vijay Malik fights with the ill intentions of Mohan Pandey etc. and who succeeds at the end is the rest of the film.

Ram Gopal Verma has given a powerful film which needs to be watched. He has exposed the media; it's positive as well as negative sides. You come to know how most of media people work.

You have seen earlier Madhur Bhandarkar making films based on true things like Chandani Bar, Page 3, Traffic Signal, Fashion etc. but now you can see Ram Gopal Verma too making such films with the start of Rann. However, we should not forget that Ram Gopal Verma had made films like Satya & Company, in the last few years, which were based on real things.

Once again I need to mention that the way Amitabh Bachchan delivers long dialogues, hardly any one does. His dialogue deliver is very impressing and effective. The way which he delivers long speech at the end is excellent.

The writer of the film Rohit Banawlikar has written a good script. Dialogues too are very impressive. Amit Rai's cinematography too is excellent.

Ritesh Deshmukh looked great in serious role and he should do such roles in future. He has justified his role. Paresh Rawal is very good in his acting but at this stage he should not do villainous role. He may do serious roles as Anupam Kher did in A Wednusday, but he should avoid villainous role. Rajpal Yadav is as good as ever and helps in keeping the moments light whenever he appears on the screen.

You may miss songs in this film but such films don't need too many songs because songs break the speed and effect of the film.

Suchitra Krishnmurty, Gul Panag and Neetu Chandra too have justified their roles.

At present our country needs such films which have the power to motivate and encourage the citizens of India to go on the right path for the sake of the country. You must watch this film even if you are not a movie lover. It is worth watching.
