Rating: 3.5/5

One-line Review: An 'Ungli' is enough to take a stand against the faulty system

Positive Points: An intelligently written script covering the social norms along with the entertainment at same time

Negative Points: Though the film connects, it fails to evoke

Plot: After a tragic incident, group of four friends- a crime reporter Abhay (Randeep Hooda), a medical intern Maya (Kangana Ranaut), a computer Engineer Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) and a mechanic Kalim (Angad Bedi) form a vigilante gang called "Ungli". Together they take up the cause of fighting the politicians, corrupt government official and all those who con the "Aam Aadmi" (common man). Every time they teach them a lesson with their antics, they upload its video on the social networking sites. With this they gain mass popularity, but then they also come under the police radar.

An honest Police officer ACP Ashok Kale (Sanjay Dutt) is handed over the "Ungli Gang" case, for which he appoints an undercover cop Nikhil (Emraan Hashmi) to expose the real faces behind this notorious gang.

Even after being a police officer Nikhil possesses a mind of thief. Through his "teeda" tactics he gets an official entry into the "Ungli Gang". Somewhere in this forgery, he starts believing in their ways which gets him struck between the right and wrong. Whether he will continue his undercover mission or will get involved in the 'Ungli' tactics, is the further watch.

Direction and other technical aspects: Coming from the writer of 'Rang De Basanti', Rensil D'Silva has build 'Ungli' plot in the same direction. Through his noteworthy framework, he severed an entertaining film that takes up the social cause of a common man's day-to-day problems, without being too preachy. He did involve a love angle of Emraan and Kangana, but purposely didn't stretch it, to remain true to the sole subject of the film.

Dialogues written by Milap Zaveri find a special mention because they have provided a nice blend of social cause and entertainment with some flakes of humour, on the screen.

Performances: Emraan Hashmi rules with his wicked smile. Zaveri's scripted dialogues sound even more effective from his mouth. He plays the role of flamboyant cop Nikhil who finds his calling in changing the system with the Ungli Gang.

Randeep Hooda's niche lies in his robust voice, which he has effectively used in the film, being the spokesperson of "Ungli Gang".

Sanjay Dutt is good in the role of ACP Kale. His characterization shows that he indeed understands the cop and thief's mindset very well.

Lady of the gang, Kangana Ranaut has less screen presence in the film, yet she looks radiantly fresh in her curls.

Neil Bhoopalam, Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia are good in their respective supporting roles.

Music: Salim-Sulaiman, Sachin-Jigar and Aslam Keyi have jointly composed the music album of the film. The theme song "Ungli Pe Nachalein" is a resonating track, which the makers have perfectly used as the background score. "Dance Basanti" is a foot-tapping party track sung by Vishal Dadlani and Anushka Manchanda. Gulraj Singh maintains the freshness of romance singing "Pakeezha".

Final Verdict: In the times where candle marches and hunger strike doesn't work, an "Ungli" is enough to bring the corrupt government babus on track. Rensil D'Silva has hit the right cord taking up the daily issues of uneven demands of Riskshawallahs, carelessness of R.T.O. officers and the never-ending greed of the government officials. Even though, the film took up piles of social problems yet it never drop its entertainment level even by a bit. Overall, 'Ungli' has fetched 3.5 stars!
